Apple at an Apple Special Event on September 7, 2016, announced the 1st generation AirPods, this came alongside the iPhone 7 and the Apple Watch Series 2. Apple started taking orders for the AirPods on December 13, 2016, and by December 20, they were available in all the Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Resellers, and selected carriers shops.
The first generation AirPods was built to run on a proprietary Apple W1 SoC processor to help in optimizing battery use. Its connection is taken care of by Bluetooth 4.2 connection. Each AirPod comes with two microphones, one is at the ear level and the other one is at the bottom of the stem.
The weight of each ranges from 0.14 oz while the charging case weighs 1.34 oz.
The production of first-generation AirPods was discontinued on March 20, 2019.

The second-generation Airpods was announced on March 20, 2019. It looks exactly as the first generation Airpods. The only difference is the updated features. The company claimed that it comes with 50% more talk time and faster device connection times. The updated feature includes an H1 processor that supports hands-free “Hey Siri”, Bluetooth 5 connectivity, and a new wireless charging case.
They are two variants case for the second generation Airpods, they include the normal 1st generation case and the wireless charging case. The wireless case can be purchased separately for $79 and it’s compatible with first-generation AirPods.
The wireless charging case was initially announced in September 2017 alongside the AirPower charging mat, but it was later canceled due to AirPower’s protracted development.
