The Lexus LC series is a grand tourer manufactured by the luxury division of Toyota, Lexus. The production of the model started in March 2017 ahead of the 2018 model year. Lexus LC replaced the SC which was produced from 1991 to 2010, the model is the first Lexus car to utilize the GA-L platform. The LC stands for “Luxury Coupe”. Development
Lexus developed the LC under the program codenamed “950A” from 2011 to 2016. Its concept prototype was revealed at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. In January 2013, design works were transferred from Calty to Toyota Technical Centre in Aichi, Japan.
The debut of the LC and powertrain
In January 2016, Lexus unveiled the Lexus LC at the same venue it debuted. The model shared the same 5.0-liter 2UR-GSE V8 engine with the RC F and GS F with an increased power output of 471 hp, the engine was mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The hybrid variant of the model dubbed the LC 500h was unveiled in Geneva in February 2016. It is powered by a combination of a 3.5-liter 8GR-FXS V6 engine, a lithium-ion battery pack, and a hybrid transmission that generates 354 hp at 6,600 rpm and an estimated 500 N.m at 3000 rpm. The battery has 44 kW and 1.1 kWh and can power the car for 6 km (4 miles).
Chassis
The Lexus LC is the first model to utilize the front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform, dubbed “Global Architecture – Luxury” (GA-L). The GA-L platform consists of various materials which include high-strength steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. Lexus designed the new platform to provide lower overall mass, improve front and rear weight distribution, and a lower center of gravity. To avoid the need for a spare tire and provide space for the vehicle battery, the use of run-flat tires was adopted.
The suspension is a double-joint multi-link suspension with a forged aluminum upper arm secured at two points, which ensures all movements are mirrored from the lower arm. The double-joint design reduces the necessary height of the suspension system, as placement is lower than a traditional single-joint setup.
