Biography
Dino Melaye was born in Kano State, Nigeria. He had his secondary school education at Abdulaziz Attah Memorial College, Okene, he then proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he obtained a BSc in Geography in 2000. While in school, he led the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and later became the Secretary-General of the African Youth Council and then that of the Commonwealth Youth Council. He was also appointed by President Olusegun Obasanjo to chair the Presidential Advisory Council on Youths.
Political life
Dino has been very active in politics in Nigeria. He decamped to the People Democratic Party where he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives representing Kabba/Ijumu federal Constituency in 2015. The same year, he was elected a member of the Senate of Nigeria from Kogi-West.
On 23 February 2019, he was re-elected as senator representing Kogi-West senatorial district at the 9th senate. His re-election suffered a major setback when he was sacked on 23 August 2019 by the tribunal, the tribunal ordered a re-run election. A re-run was conducted and he lost with a margin of over 20,000 votes to his political rival Smart Adeyemi in an election that was declared inconclusive by INEC due to violence and electoral irregularities in over 50 polling units in the senatorial district. Following the irregularities in the re-run, a makeup date was fixed for 30 30 November 2019. The supplementary election suffered a low turnout of electorates. The low turnout was blamed on harassment, killings, and intimidation faced during the main election.
Governorship ambition
He didn’t throw in the towel after his last defeat, he kept fighting. This time around, he went for something bigger. Dino Melaye contested for the Kogi State gubernatorial election which was held on 16 November 2019. He lost his gubernatorial ambition in a keenly contested primary election where he came third with a total of 70 votes behind Engr. Musa Wada won with 748 votes in count on 3 September 2019.
In 2023, he was declared the winner of the 2023 People Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Kogi State.
Dino Melaye lost the 2023 Kogi State Governorship Election as he came third with 46,362 votes and Ahmed Usman Ododo emerged winner from the All Progressive Congress (APC).’
