Engine, transmission and performance
At the rear of the 2-door coupe is a 7,993 cc [8.0 L] quad-turbocharged W16 engine producing between 1,479 hp on the base Chiron and 1,600 hp on the top of the range Chiron Super Sport and the Super Sport 300+. It produces 1,600 Nm of torque at 2,000 to 6,000 rpm. Power generated by this engine is sent to the permanent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system by a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). The transmission consists of seven forward gears and one reverse.
It hits 100 km/h from rest in just 2.4 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 420 km/h on the base model and 440 km/h on the Chiron Super Sport grade.
Body
The body is made of a carbon fiber structure. It also comes with independent suspension and the Haldex all-wheel-drive system. The stiffness of the carbon fiber body is rated at 50,000 Nm per degree.
Record Breaking performance
It was announced at the 2017 IAA show, Frankfurt, that Bugatti Chiron broke the record of fastest 0 – 400 – 0 km/h [0 – 249 – 0 mph] acceleration time. The Chiron completed this in 41.96 seconds in a span of 3.2 kilometers at the Ehra-Lessien high-speed oval. The car was driven by Colombian racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
The Bugatti Chiron’s top speed is electronically limited to 420 km/h or 375 to 380 km/h without the specific key, for safety reasons, mainly arising from tires, as the manufacturers concluded that no tyre currently manufactured would be able to withstand the stress at top speed the Chiron is capable of achieving.
