Hummer SUVs and pickups were first marketed in 1992 when AM General began selling civilian versions of the M998 Humvee. General Motors (GM) purchased the brand new in 1998 from AM General and marketed three vehicles; the original Hummer H1 which was based on the Military Humvee, as well as the new H2 and H3 models that were based on smaller, civilian market GM platforms. Origin of Hummer
In the late 1980s, AM General had plans to sell a civilian version of its Humvee with the same structure and most mechanical components. The civilian model began in part because of the persistence of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who saw an Army convoy while filming Kindergarten Cop in Oregon and began to lobby for a civilian version to be available on the market.

The civilian version of the M998 Humvee vehicle was first sold in 1992, with the first two Hummer H1s purchased by Schwarzenegger.
GM purchase
General Motors acquired the brand name in December 1997. GM was responsible for the marketing and distribution of all civilian Hummers produced by AM General.
GM introduced two of its design, the H2, and H3, and renamed the original vehicle H1. The production of H1 ended in 2006.
By 2006, Hummer began to be exported and sold through importers and distributors in 33 countries. The production of Hummer 3 began at its Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa for international markets.

Discontinuation of the Hummer
Hummer was discontinued on June 1, 2009, as part of the General Motors bankruptcy announcement. The last Hummer H3 rolled off the line at Shreveport on May 24, 2010.
The comeback
Hummer made a comeback in 2020, this time it was bigger and better with a whooping 1000 horsepower engine. GM dropped the internal combustion engine and opted for an all-electric powertrain that produces 1000 horsepower.
