 For the 2023 model year, Toyota has added yet a new turbocharged engine to the lineup. The new 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine uses balance shafts to produce 265-horsepower and torque of 309 lb-ft. The new engine and power

New on the 2023 Toyota Highlander lineup is the new 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 265-horsepower and a maximum torque of 309 lb-ft. The fuel efficiency is still the same as the V6 engine with the manufacturer’s estimated 24 MPG combined. The new engine is more environmentally friendly, with more than a 50% reduction in NOx and NMOG as well as an improvement in CO2 emissions when compared to the outgoing V6 engine.

 For reduced fuel consumption and emissions, the standard Stop and Start Engine System allows the engine to shut off when the vehicle comes to a complete stop and instantly restarts when the driver’s foot lifts from the brake pedal. This feature is also available on the 2022 Toyota Highlander.

 Towing capacity

  All new Highlanders with turbocharged engines are equipped to tow up to 5,000 pounds. They make use of the Trailer Sway Control (TSC), which uses the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to help control unwanted trailer movement.

What’s new in the 2023 Toyota Highlander?

 New on the 2023 Toyota Highlander Limited and Platinum grade are the two 12.3-inch Multi-Information Display (MID) screens as standard. A second new 12.3″ Full Digital Instrument Cluster screen replaces the 7-inch TFT, now with four different visual modes for a personalized touch: Casual, Smart, Tough, and Sporty mode.

 Optional on the XLE and sporty XSE grades is the 12.3-inch center touchscreen, which has an 8-inch screen as standard. The two grades retain their 7-inch TFT gauge cluster screen.

The 7-inch TFT replaces the 4.2-inch TFT on the L and LE grades to enhance stability, while the 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard for the Hybrid Bronze Edition.

Now standard on the Limited and Platinum grades are the power-folding exterior mirror, to aid the driver when entering and exiting home garages.

Charging your phones in the 2023 Highlander is easier with the wireless charging feature for the front seat-seat passengers. Toyota also moved the Qi-compatible charger from the other center box to a more convenient location on the instrument panel shelf.

Opening the truck is now easier with the hands-free power liftgate which is standard on the XLE and XSE grades. With a hands-free power liftgate, a kick of a foot under the bumper opens or closes the liftgate.

 New exterior color options

 New color options on the 2023 Highlander include an available Cypress exterior color, and the Harvest Beige and Glazed Caramel interiors which now feature Black as the accent color, replacing Noble Brown.

The Hybrid Bronze Edition and XSE

 Few tech features were enhanced on the Hybrid Bronze Edition, they include the interior 120V/1,500-watt outlets, hands –free power liftgate and rain sensing wipers.

 The gas variant of the 2023 Highlander XSE is available with either front-wheel drive or Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive. For the 2023 model year, the Highlander XSE comes standard with all-black 20-inch wheels, wrapped in 235/55R20 all-season tires.

 XSE-exclusive styling applies to the front fascia, grille, lower spoiler, and headlamps. Unique rocker panels add an edgy accent to the Highlander XSE’s sculpted lines. Black roof rails, mirror caps, and window moldings dial up the subtle cool factor, finished off by a twin exhaust ti

The interior features black SofTex-trimmed seats with fabric inserts, while ambient lighting and carbon-fiber style finish on the instrument panel set the sportier mood. Available at no additional cost is the striking two-tone red and black leather-trimmed interior with a red-stitched instrument panel.

 The Highlander L and LE grades come standard with a second-row bench for seating for eight, while the XLE and Limited grades come standard with Captain’s Chair second row for seven-seat capability.

 The Hybrid Bronze Editon, XSE, Limited, and Platinum grades come standard with seven-passenger seating with second-row Captain’s Chairs.

 Multimedia system

Standard on the 2023 Toyota Highlander is n 8-inch, and an available 12.3-inch Toyota audio Multimedia system designed and engineered by Toyota’s Texas-based Connected Technologies team. Highlander drivers will be at the ready thanks to a wide range of enhanced connectivity and convenience features, including being Over-the-air (OTA) updatable.

The All-Wheel-Drive system

Standard on the 2023 Toyota Highlander turbo models is an option of FWD or two different available AWD systems. The optional AWD system can send up to 50% torque to the rear wheels to help counter wheel slip on the Highlander Gas L, LE, and XLE models when necessary.

 The Highlander XSE, Limited, and Platinum turbo models step up to a more performance-minded system, Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Drive Mode Select and Driveline Disconnect. In addition to governing torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, this advanced system uses special couplings to actively manage torque distribution between the left and right rear wheels.
