This article will revolve around the history, specifications, and price of Toyota highlander in Nigeria.
It’s a 5-door midsize crossover SUV with a front-engine layout. It was built on the same platform as used on the Camry. The SUV was the best seller until 2006 when it was surpassed by the smaller RAV4. The name Toyota Kluger was used in Japan and Australia because they cannot register the register highlander due to Hyundai Terracan. Kluger is a German which means “one who is smart”.

First-generation 2000- 2007
As stated earlier, the production of the first-generation Toyota Highlander commenced in 2000 ahead of the 2001 model year and it came to a halt in 2007. It came with 5 and seven seat-seat variants, in other words, it came in three rows and two rows of seats. The three-row seating configuration came into existence from 2004 all through 2007. It offered two drive trains which were the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

The highlander was offered in three trim in the United States: the base model, the Sport model, and the limited models. Note that the sport model was introduced in 2006.
The first-generation Highlander featured three different engines which include a 2.4L 2AZ-FE I4 engine producing 155 hp that was in used all through the first generation, a 3.0 L 1MZ-FE V6 engine producing 203 hp that was used from 2001 to 2003, and a 3.3L 3MZ-FE V6 engine that produces 225 hp, this engine variant was used from 2004 to 2007 model years.
The 3.0 engine variant was able to accelerate the SUV from 0 – 60 mph in under 8.8 seconds. With the new 3.3-liter engine, it can accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h in 7.8 seconds.
They were two variants of transmission available in the Highlander model were a 4-speed U140E automatic transmission and a 5-speed U151E/F automatic transmission. The model didn’t feature manual transmission at all.
There have been so many series of updates over the years, which include the 2001 update, the 2003 update, and the 2005 update.
The hybrid version
Hybrid version was introduced in 2005. It was a Hybrid Synergy Drive technology which was combined with Toyota’s 3MZ-FE 3.3-liter V6 engine. The hybrid version offered two drive trains which were FWD [Front Wheel Drive] and an AWD [All Wheel Drive].
It debuted at 2004 North American International Auto Show, it went on sale in July 2005 ahead if the 2006 model. This was a breakthrough in the aspect of hybrid cars. There were so many modifications that included the power steering pump, water pump, and AC compressor where changed from belt-drive to electrically powered versions.

Second Generation Highlander [2007 – 2013]
The second-generation Toyota Highlander was a total makeover. The design, the interior, the exterior, the entertainment system, etc were all new. The production started in May 2007 ahead of the 2008 model year. It featured a hybrid model right from the inception. Both models made their first appearance at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. The bad news for Japan is the fact that the second-generation Highlander was not sold in Japan.

The second generation featured four engine variants which include two internal combustion engines and two-hybrid engines. They are 2.7 L 1AR-FE 14 engine, a 3.5 L 2GR-FE V6 engine, a 3.3 L 3MZ-FE V6 hybrid engine, and a 3.5L 2GR-FXE hybrid engine. The engines were mated with either a 5-speed U151E automatic transmission or a 6-speed U760E automatic transmission.
The 2010 update:
Some changes were effected in the model in 2010 ahead of the 2011 model year, moreover, the changes affected both the Highlander and the Hybrid version. There was a slight change in the design with only some minor changes in the bumpers and the lightens.

Third-generation [2013 – 2019]
The third-generation Toyota Highlander debuted on 27th March 2013 at the New York International Auto Show. The production began on 5th December 2013 with plans by Toyota to start delivery in early 2014. The new version was a complete makeover, in terms of the body, it was longer and wider than its predecessor and its design has changed to other mid-size crossover SUVs.

This generation can accommodate eight passengers comfortably, to achieve this, the company had to add a sliding second-row point of entry that gives it 4.3 inches. Other amazing features include a pre-collision, lane departure, 12 JBL speakers, etc.

In Australia, the model still retained its native name, Toyota Kluger. Toyota is moving to electric cars, the present generation Highlander looks like an electric car. Its production started in November 2019 ahead of the 2020 model. It made its first appearance at the New York International Auto Show on the 17th of April 2019. This generation featured five different model grades which include L, LE, XLE, Limited, and, Platinum.
